Something truly unique for Cyprus’ summer agenda is landing in Larnaca this week. The international acclaimed ballet of the State Opera of Sofia travels to the coastal city as part of the Larnaca Festival 2026. In just a few days, some of the world’s most renowned ballet dancers will bring to life a tale this island knows well – Zorba the Greek.

On July 29 and 30, the acclaimed ballet company is set to captivate audiences with one of the world’s most celebrated ballet productions. Stepping onto the stage of the Pattihio Amphitheatre of Larnaca are talented artists – amongst them are Bolshoi Ballet principal dancer Igor Tsvirko and Ballet Kazan soloist Oleg Ivenko.

For just two nights, the unforgettable score by legendary Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis will come alive as this excellent production of Zorba the Greek is presented.

The historic ballet, with choreography choreographed by Lorca Massine, premiered at Italy’s Arena di Verona in 1988, where it received widespread critical acclaim. Since then, the ballet has toured extensively, with hundreds of performances in numerous countries, earning its place among the most beloved works in the international ballet repertoire.

The production tells the story of the larger-than-life Zorba, whose passion for life, resilience and free spirit continue to resonate with audiences around the world. Through powerful choreography and Theodorakis’ timeless music, the ballet explores themes of freedom, love, loss and the triumph of the human spirit.

The performance promises to be one of the festival’s cultural highlights, bringing together internationally acclaimed artists and one of the Greek world’s most iconic artistic works.
