Averof Neophytou, who recently announced his candidacy for the 2028 presidential elections, assured the public on Friday that he would “never betray them”.
In a message on his personal WhatsApp channel, Neophytou thanked the “thousands of compatriots” for their messages of support, saying he was “moved”.
He said the messages from “every corner of our Cyprus – the diaspora, people from across the entire political spectrum, unaffiliated people and, of course, my fellow members of Disy – give me strength”.
“I will never betray you. And we will never again allow anyone to betray our common vision and plan for our country and our children. And this is my commitment to all my compatriots and the society as a whole,” he added.
Neophytou announced last Sunday that he will stand in the 2028 presidential election, citing the continued deadlock in the Cyprus problem following high-level contacts in New York.
The former Disy boss also pointed to the approaching end of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ term, saying Guterres, who had linked his legacy to efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, would leave office in three months with the deadlock unresolved.
He said his campaign would focus on addressing the country’s major problems, improving prospects for young people, building what he described as a fairer society and, above all, achieving the reunification of Cyprus.
