A number of schools in the mountains were closed on Wednesday because of the cold weather, the education ministry said.

The affected schools are Lemythou, Agros and Omodhos high schools and Kyperounta, Platres, Pelendri, Trimiklini, Agros, Pachna, Panayia, Kampos and Farmakas primary schools.

Teaching is being carried out online, the ministry added.

Moreover, pupils who cannot make their way to school because of the weather, even if their school is in operation, will also after consulting school management, be able to follow class online.

The ministry said it was giving schools in the mountains the option, provided there is agreement between school management, teaching staff, the parents’ association, and the school board, to change the start and finish of the class to adapt to the unfavourable weather conditions.

It also noted that following a revision of health protocols for the winter months, since the heating needs to be switched on, rather than doors and windows remaining open during class, these should be opened during breaks to ensure ventilation.

Heating can be turned on one hour before the start of class, it added.
