Dysfunctionalities in Contemporary Art

conference cover

It’s been a good while since we have been able to attend an event but there are some planned for March onwards.

The A.G. Leventis Gallery will host an international conference on March 13 on issues related to art under conditions of political tension investigating the relationship between artist and state. ‘Dysfunctionalities in Contemporary Art | in times of conflict’ is organised by EKaTe Cyprus and will be a full-day event. The conference will take place in English and will include different speakers covering various aspects.

Describing art as the imprint of humanity and a lever of creative energy that feeds cultural heritage, organisers say “issues related to Art and Artists’ rights under conditions of political tension will be discussed, investigating the relationship between the artist and the political strategy of a state, the concerns and methods of approach.”

The conference is shaped by the artists’ own concerns and needs to share with the public their work and the procedures they are called to employ to promote it. The role of political instability and the impact it has on the creation of Art raises many questions about its values, artistic creation and its relationship with the state. The conference aims to dissect, explore and discuss the particularities of the role of cultural institutions, public organisations and the cultural policies of a state that shape and impact the life and work of an artist.

Dysfunctionalities in Contemporary Art is part of a larger ongoing programme that aspires to be a communication platform activating mechanisms to develop networking and training as well as envision creative ways in which to deal with conflictual phenomena in the arts.
