The medieval castles of Paphos and Larnaca will be lit up in red on Monday night to mark World Encephalitis Day.

The antiquities department explained that the symbolic gesture will highlight the solidarity of the whole of society towards people who suffer from this condition.

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the membranes around the brain and the spinal cord, affecting around 500,000 people worldwide each year.

It is caused by an infection invading the brain or occurring through the immune system and it affects both adults and children.

“We all stand together in this fight,” the antiquities department said

Monuments and landmarks all over the world will be lit in red, including the Niagara Falls and the bridges over the Danube river in Vienna.
