Coronavirus: Fewer Covid-19 deaths in past two weeks after January’s heavy toll

Cyprus saw fewer Covid-19 deaths over the last two weeks following the deadliest period in January, the health ministry announced on Friday.

Between February 12-19, deaths were down by 33 per cent compared with the previous week.

Eight deaths were reported during that period compared with 12 deaths reported in the week prior to that, while only one death was reported between February 19 to 24, the ministry’s epidemiological unit said in the national report.

The majority of deaths, six, came from Limassol.

Since the pandemic outbreak, 231 people have died from Covid-19. Of those, 84 came from Nicosia and 69 from Limassol. Another 49 people who had tested positive for the virus have died since the start of the outbreak, but their death was not attributed to Covid-19.

January was the deadliest month, with 86 deaths corresponding to 31 per cent of the total deaths reported from coronavirus in the island, the ministry added.

The highest frequency of deaths occurs in the age group of 80-84 years, translating to 66 people or 24 per cent of total number of deaths.
