In this video, we head to Berners Tavern, the beating heart of the London EDITION hotel, which, under star chef and restaurateur Jason Atherton, serves one of the best afternoon teas in the capital.

Brainchild of hotelier Ian Schrager, and set in Fitzrovia’s former Berners Hotel, the EDITION’s design includes elements of London gentlemen’s clubs, secret Parisian hideaways and New York’s Grand Central Station.

Having opened in 2013, it quickly established itself as one of London’s most exciting design-led hotels. And within the Grade II-listed Georgian building is the ground-floor Berners Tavern, with its 18ft-high stucco ceiling, chandeliers, open-plan dining room and hung collection of 185 historic and contemporary portraits, landscapes and still-life photographs.

Here, thanks to executive chef Phil Carmichael’s multicultural team, the ritual of afternoon tea is elevated far beyond the usual fare, to include such unique treats as poppy-seed and sunflower seed scones, and raspberry macarons with yuzu gel.

Fans of the refined spread include a host of celebrities, from Rita Ora to George Clooney.
