Last frontier: Western Australia’s rugged Kimberley region

In this video, we take a pre-Covid bus trip across the Kimberley region in Western Australia’s far north, checking out 10 of the must-sees and must-dos, along the way.

Characterised by red dust, endless skies and formidable rivers and gorges, stretching from the coastal town of Broome in the west to Kununurra in the east, the Kimberley truly is Australia’s frontier region.

Meanwhile, larger than 75% of the world’s countries, and hemmed by impenetrable coastline and deserts, aboriginal culture runs deep across the Kimberley, from the Dampier Peninsula to distant Mitchell Plateau, where ancient Wandjina and Gwion Gwion stand vigil over sacred waterholes.

If you’re travelling through this breathtaking area, highlights that should be on your itinerary include driving the famous Gibb River Road, riding a camel on Broome’s Cable Beach at sunset, experiencing the age-old beauty of the Bungle Bungles and cruising majestic Lake Argyle.
