The health ministry announced one death and a record 941 cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday.

A 69-year-old man died at Nicosia general hospital after being treated in the ICU unit. He had received the first dose of the vaccine.

The death toll now stands at 295, of which 195 were men and 100 women.

There are 277 people in hospital, 68 of which are in serious condition. Of that 68, 30 are intubated, seven are in ICU but not intubated and 31 in a high dependency unit.

The 941 new cases are the result of 56,768 tests, both PCR and rapid, which equates with a positivity rate of 1.66 per cent.

The total number of positives to date is 58,022.

Of the 56,768 tests, 6,815 were PCR and 49,953 rapid tests. The majority, 511 of the 941 positives came from rapid testing, while 188 came from 1,672 samples taken though contract tracing and 211 from 3,351 samples taken through private initiative.

Two positives came from 316 samples taken through GP referrals, while 21 cases came from 282 samples processed by hospital labs.

In addition, 1,194 samples were taken at airports with eight positives.

Among rapid tests 207 cases were detected in Nicosia (1.37 per cent positivity rate), 128 in Limassol (1.29 per cent), 77 in Larnaca (1.28 per cent), 27 in Paphos (0.81 per cent) and 13 in Famagusta (0.62 per cent).

The epidemiological team saw these numbers coming, Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Virology at the University of Nicosia Medical School and member of the team Petros Karayiannis told CyBC.

He later told CNA that if things continue to get worse “we could go up to 1,000 cases”.

The current situation is worrying, considering that those testing positive declare around ten contacts, he continued. “If even two of those contacts test positive, then we are talking about really high numbers”.

So far there are no plans to tighten measures, only to prolong current ones until mid-May, but “if things get completely out of control, we cannot rule out another lockdown,” he said.

“With collective efforts and strict adherence to health protocols we can turn the tide by mid-May,” he added.
