Oahu: Hawaii’s ‘Gathering Place’ of waves, trails and peaks

Covid or no… there is an overwhelming desire to travel again, as soon as pandemic-related restrictions are lifted across borders. Having said that, concerns over the sustainability of overseas travel is also fiercely building, and unlikely to abate at a time of climate change-related fears.

Until these issues resolve (or not), in the meantime there is virtual travelling… and in this video, we head to Hawaii’s beautiful Oahu island, situated in the Pacific Ocean.

Also known as ‘The Gathering Place’, Oahu is composed of two shield volcanoes: the Waiʻanae and Koʻolau Ranges, with a broad valley – the central Oahu Plain – between them. The highest point is Kaʻala in the Waiʻanae Range, rising to 4,003 feet (1,220 m) above sea level.

Thanks to Hawaii’s warm local hospitality, all visitors – whether globe-trotting surf fans, honeymooners, or reuniting members of a big ʻohana (extended family) – are guaranteed a memorable time. Most arrive in Honolulu, largest city, state capital, and main deepwater marine port for the State of Hawaii, and set about enjoying the sun, sand and adventure options that abound.

Seasoned surfers can hit the big waves on the North Shore; bodyboard at Waimanalo, stand-up paddle at Haleʻiwa, dive into Hanauma Bay’s giant fishbowl, or windsurf or kayak in Kailua Bay. For those preferring to trek there’s hiking up Diamond Head or atop knife-edged ‘pali’ (cliffs). The more daring can jump out of a plane or soar in a glider above the North Shore, or circle the island in a helicopter.

Adventuring aside, there is Oahu’s sheer natural beauty and Hawaii’s heritage to appreciate, from ancient heiau (stone temples) to sacred hula dances and chants. It should go without saying that any visit here or to any of Hawaii’s other islands demands respect for local ecosystems and multicultural traditions.

If you find yourself in Oahu, consider adding the following to your itinerary:

  • USS Arizona Memorial
  • Pearl Harbor National Memorial
  • Bishop Museum
  • Iolani Palace
  • Honolulu Museum of Art
  • Honolulu’s Chinatown
  • Diamond Head trail
  • Hiking around Mount Tantalus
  • Sunset Hula at Waikiki Beach
  • Surfing the North Shore
  • Snorkelling at Hanauma Bay
  • Kailua Beach Park
  • Pupukea Beach Park
  • Waimanalo Bay Beach Park
  • Waimea Bay
