PCOS: the signs and symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

This video is meant to expand your general knowledge about living a healthy life and is NOT a substitute for seeking medical advice. Please consult with your doctor before making changes in your health practices, diet and self-care.

In this video, Family Medicine physician Dr. Sanaz Majd goes over the signs and symptoms of PCOS, or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a condition affecting one in 10 women, many of whom go through life without ever being diagnosed.

Polycystic ovaries contain a large number of harmless follicles that are up to 8mm in size. The follicles are underdeveloped sacs in which eggs develop. In PCOS, these sacs are often unable to release an egg, which means ovulation does not take place. Its cause is unknown, but it often runs in families.
