Solo performance asks Who Cares?

Be tall, be skinny, hairless, flexible. The messages on how our body should look and feel come from all directions these days. Social media, ads, marketing, films, celebrities, social pressure, policies. Omada En Drasi presents a solo performance that explores the tensions created between what we regard as good for ourselves and our bodies, and what society imposes and dictates to us.

Titled Who Cares? and choreographed and performed by Evie Demetriou, the performance will first take place at Rialto Theatre in Limassol on May 22 and 23 before moving to the Egomio Cultural Centre in Nicosia on May 26.

Through the lens of personal identity, gender and ageing, Who Cares? examines how external forces, such as social norms and stereotypes, but also public policies, can influence personal perception and actions. The performance combines movement and speech, to guide spectators through a physical and emotional journey.

“We constantly come across impositions forced upon our body,” says Evie, “either through a direct way – for example, through sexual harassment – or an indirect manner, such as social taboos and expectations. Socially, we are going through an intense period where political decisions are forcibly imposed upon our bodies. With my own personal view on the contradictions between my own feelings and what is expected of me as a starting point, along with the question of how the personal can become collective, I began the artistic research with dramaturg Guy Cools”.
