Two people, aged 20 and 21, lost their lives in a traffic accident in Nicosia on Sunday night.

According to the police, Maria Kelasidou, 20, from Strovolos and Giorgos Athansiou, 21, from Lakatamia died in the accident on Strovolos Avenue at 9.45 on Sunday.

The accident happened between the crossroads with Perikleous street and the T-junction with Athalassa Avenue, while the two were in a car heading towards Nicosia. The car was driven by the 20-year-old, with the 21-year-old as front seat passenger.

Under circumstances still being investigated by the police, Kelasidou lost control of the car, and crossed over the central reservation, ending up in the opposite lane of traffic where she crashed with a car driven by a 47-year-old woman.

The two youngsters were trapped inside their car and had to be freed by the fire service. They were taken to Nicosia general hospital where doctors certified their deaths.

The driver of the other car was also taken to hospital where she was treated for light injuries and released.

The police have asked anyone who knows anything about the accident to call the hotline on 1460 or the nearest police station.
