A 49-year-old man was charged with offences related to human trafficking for labour exploitation and withholding personal documents concerning five people, police said on Saturday.

He was arrested on June 3 after police and officials of the labour inspection department visited his fields and facilities in the Nicosia district following reports of the bad living conditions of his employees and violations of their employment terms.

According to the police, the suspect was investigated for offences concerning human trafficking for labour exploitation, withholding personal documents and offences on the violation of the law on money laundering.

A case was filed with the Nicosia district court, and he is to answer to his charges on September 13. The court on Friday ordered that the 49-year-old released on bail. He was ordered to present twice per week to a police station until the trial.
