CULTURESCOPE: interview with artist Marina Emphietzi (from Season 1, Episode 13)

In this video, taken from Season 1, Episode 13 of CULTURESCOPE, founder and host of the popular web series Paul Lambis interviews native Famagustian artist Marina Emphietzi.

Having studied at the prestigious schools of Central St-Martins and the University of Arts London, with influences as diverse as Greek mythology and J. M. W. Turner, Emphietzi creates multi-textured paintings thrumming with a robust, playful energy, inspired chiefly by the sea.

“I have a very strong bond with the sea, and I think the sea is the energy to the journey of life,” she says. “Life is the feelings we have – it’s time, it’s sadness, it’s happiness.

“Because the boat takes you away – that’s sadness; the boat brings you back – that’s happiness; you see your loved ones, or the sea takes your loved ones away… all these are feelings that form the journey of our lives.”

The expressionist artist’s works, executed in mixed media and oils, have featured in over 40 solo and group exhibitions across the world.
