Coronavirus: One death, 200 new cases (updated)

One person has died from Covid, as 200 new infections from 55,143 tests were detected, a positivity rate of 0.36 per cent, the health ministry said on Wednesday.

At the same time, 56 people were being treated in hospital, 18 of whom in serious or critical condition.

The death concerns an 85-year-old woman who was being treated at Famagusta general hospital.

The number of deaths since March 2020 has reached 571 — 363 men and 208 women. The average age of deceased is 76.1. The total number of recorded infections is 123,908.

The ministry said 55.4 of the hospitalised patients were not vaccinated.

Three post-Covid patients were on the ventilator.

Of the 18 in serious or critical condition, eight were intubated, three were being treated in an ICU without intubation, and seven were in high dependency units.

Forty-one of the new cases were close contacts of previously confirmed infections. They were detected among 462 samples.

Seven cases concerned arriving passengers at the two airports who were detected in 1,974 samples and 34 were among 1,473 samples testes privately.

State hospital labs reported one infection after 181 tests while private labs and pharmacies reported 68 in 24,991 samples tested with rapid antigen tests.

Units participating in the state’s screening programme reported 49 cases in 25,812 samples.

Turkish Cypriots reported 109 new infections on Wednesday after 17,403 tests. The total number in the north since March 2020 has reached 22,074.
