Third remand in bizarre Christmas murder plot

Lssol Court
Limassol Court

A 26-year-old man was remanded in custody for four days on Thursday in connection with a bizarre plot to murder the chairman of the Limassol school commission Dinos Ellinas.

The suspect is suspected of being the person who sold two pistols to two brothers, building contractors, who allegedly plotted to kill Ellinas. The two were remanded in custody for five days on Wednesday.

Both court hearings were held behind closed doors.

The brothers, 25 and 16, admitted having business dealings with the commission, but deny wanting to kill Ellinas over financial differences.

So far, the authorities have not found any weapons apart from a replica at the home of one of the brothers who claimed he bought online.

Police made the arrests after an informant, who took part in the alleged plot, went to the authorities. The man claimed the two brothers were planning to execute Ellinas with firearms they had acquired from the third suspect.

The informant, who worked for the brothers, admitted that he had acted as the middleman in the gun purchase.

He said it had all started three months ago, when they approached him and asked if he could source a pistol.

The informant claimed that the brothers revealed they wanted to kill Ellinas during Christmas. They would allegedly dress as Santa Clauses and knock on his door pretending to be carollers.

He also told police he had sourced two pistols and ammunition for them for €9,000 and received €1,400 as commission.

Ellinas expressed surprise over the affair, saying that as far as he could tell from the little contact he had with the brothers, he never expected them to reach such a point.

He said they had no financial differences with the company, which was carrying out maintenance work at Limassol schools.

Only this week, he said, they had written cheques worth €20,000 for work they did.

Ellinas said he had made comments regarding some mistakes he said had been made, but they were not anything beyond the norm.
