Road closures due to snowfall and rockslides in mountains

Several roads were closed on Wednesday morning as snow fell in the mountainous areas of the island, including villages in the Nicosia district.

Apart from the roads leading to Troodos, police warned drivers that only four-wheel drive or vehicles equipped with snow chains were allowed Klirou-FIkardou, Kalo Chorio-Gouri, Pedoula-Kykko-Kambo and Orkonta-Kambo.

Closed for all vehicles were Palechori-Agro, Aska-Fterikoudi, Farmaka-Apliki, and Lagoudera to Xyliatou, Saranti, Polystypou and Chandrion, Gouri-Machera, Kakopetrias-Karvounas, Pedoula-Prodromou, Pedoula-Pine Wood and Kakopetria-Spilia-Kannavia.

The announcement added that rockfalls were recorded in Gerasas-Kalo Chorio while Pedoula-Kykkou-Kambou and Orkonta-Kambou roads are also dangerous due to landslides.

Police added that before noon, they aided drivers who were stranded with their vehicles on mountainous roads due to snow.

The police warning came as photos and videos circulated on social media on Wednesday morning showing snow falling in various villages outside Nicosia.

Snow covered areas of Kapedes, Kakopetria, Askas, Odou, Farmakas and Palechori among others.
