Unficyp chief Colin Stewart on Monday discussed measures to restore hope in the prospect of a comprehensive resolution of the Cyprus problem with main opposition Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou.

In a statement, the party said it had a meeting with the special representative of the UN secretary-general and head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus Colin Stewart and a four-member delegation of the Good Offices Mission in Cyprus.

Stefanou welcomed Stewart to his new duties and underlined Akel’s firm commitment to a solution within the agreed framework and cooperation with the UN Good Offices Mission in this direction.

He reiterated the party’s position for the resumption of negotiations from where they left off in 2017.

The two also exchanged views on the current state of the Cyprus problem and the prospect of initiatives to allow the resumption of negotiations.

Stewart took up his post in December.
