Coronavirus: 12 people, 5 businesses fined for violations

Twelve people and five businesses were booked on Saturday during police checks for violating coronavirus protocols.

The fines came from 2,096 checks carried out across the republic in the past 24 hours.

A police spokesman said that most individuals fined were not wearing a protective mask.

Six individuals and two businesses received fines in Nicosia after 624 checks. The businesses were fined 750 and 500 each after managers were found working without masks.

Another 217 checks in Limassol turned up no violations while in Larnaca, 400 checks resulted in three fines for individuals.

Three more people were fined in Famagusta after 562 checks, and 77 checks in Morphou resulted in no fines.

In addition, three more businesses were fined in Paphos following 113 checks.

The first was fined €750 after a noise complaint led police to discover it had been operating without a licence. The business in question also did not have the correct signs urging people to obey the measures, and an employee was found not wearing a mask.

The second business was fined €500 for operating without a licence and for not using a thermometer.

The two businesses will be taken to court.

The third business received a fine of €1,000 after police discovered it had not been checking people for a SafePass.

A total of 103 checks by traffic police did not end in any fines.
