Main opposition party Akel on Wednesday said it plans to propose ending twice-yearly exams, a matter that will be urgently discussed by the House education committee next Wednesday.

On Thursday, students, teachers and parents will gather outside the presidential palace “in a last-ditch effort to find a solution to the huge issues surrounding twice-yearly exams”, Akel MP Christos Christofides said.

“These exams have already put thousands of graduating students at risk of missing out on access to European universities, at the same time causing mental and other problems to all secondary school students.”

Now, the government wants to extend the institution of universal examinations to primary education, starting “if you can believe it,” from the first grade of primary school, he added.

The MP said Akel is appealing to the government and the education ministry, even at the very last moment, to reconsider “the pedagogical crime that has been committed against thousands of students and their parents,” and to find a solution to the issue.

“We have prepared a bill proposing the abolition of twice-yearly exams, which must be met with a majority vote across the House, lest it is construed as a vote of confidence for the exams,” he said.

Christofides therefore called on all political forces, particularly the opposition, to join Akel in finding a solution, “or at least applying effective pressure that will give the government no other option but to find a solution”.

Lastly he said he hopes the education minister will be present at the next House education committee next Wednesday, when the issue will be discussed.
