Upcoming creative workshops for children

Sunny playdates, crafty activities and village road trips are what spring brings with it and a series of creative workshops seek to entertain children and families. Throughout April, artists, boutiques and museums are organising fun activities to engage children in crafty affairs, some with a traditional Cypriot flair, others inspired by the Easter period.

Coming up first is a workshop at the Nicosia shop Bomba Picnic that is inspired by American artist Georgia O’Keeffe which will teach children how to make 3D paper flowers. The morning of Saturday April 9 aims to introduce O’Keeffe and her iconic flower paintings through the book Meet the artist Georgia O’Keefe. Inspired by her work, artist and teacher Elena Christou will show children how to make their own paper flowers and create spring wreaths. Suitable for children aged 5 and older, two groups will run on Saturday – at 10am and at 11.45am.

Also happening this weekend is a fun workshop at Phini village that will take children on a colourful hands-on journey learning about the Cypriot chair. As part of the series of workshops, Dio Dio Handmade is currently hosting comes a workshop addressed to young creatives aged 7 to 13.

On April 10 from 10am to 11.30am and then from 12pm to 1.30pm, the workshop will allow children to experiment with the techniques of the traditional Cypriot chair, using favourite colours. “We will use ropes and other natural materials, with which we will learn to weave a frame, using colours that make us feel beautiful,” says Dio Dio Handmade. “Through immersive playing activities, the children will learn an art that is on the verge of extinction, while creating a unique souvenir that they can take home with them. During the workshop, we will address subjects of ecological education and cultural heritage.”

Towards the end of the month, as we enter the Holy Week, the AG Leventis Gallery is organising an Easter treasure hunt among paintings and artists. Easter eggs will be cleverly hidden in the Gallery’s Greek Collection and on April 20 children are invited to find them together with museum educators and decorate them in time for Easter celebrations.
