Man who escaped police custody remanded

Paphos police HQ

Paphos police on Tuesday said a 26-year-old man has been remanded for one day on Monday after he escaped police detention with the help of two other people.

Two more people, aged 51 and 25, were also arrested for the same case, police told the Cyprus News Agency.

The suspect was remanded in connection with a case of escape from police detention, assault, causing actual bodily harm to an officer, assaulting an officer, stealing handcuffs, and causing public disturbance.

He was arrested on Holy Saturday, CID chief and Paphos police spokesman Michalis Nicolaou said, after police asked the driver of a vehicle parked near Emba’s church to stop sounding its horn which was causing public disturbance. The suspect, who was among the four passengers of the car, allegedly pushed the officer.

According to the police, that day, the 26-year-old allegedly managed to escape the officers with the help of two other people, aged 51 and 25.

He was later arrested on Easter Sunday and was brought before the Paphos District Court on Monday.
