The final person, out of the 18 individuals hospitalised and treated for their injuries following Saturday’s violence at the Pournara reception centre for asylum seekers, has been discharged from Nicosia General Hospital.

A fight that broke out around 5pm resulted in the injury and hospitalisation of one person, police on Saturday told the Cyprus Mail. The fight allegedly involved people of Pakistani and African descent.

Earlier in the day, police said information from the centre suggested as many as 300 people were involved in a fight which broke out around 11am between two different nationalities.

The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) reported that 17 of those injured were released after receiving first aid treatment, while the 18th was detained to be examined by an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. He was also released following further medical examinations on Saturday.

Reports said police had to intervene with tear gas, however their use was not immediately confirmed by the police’s press office.

Officers collected witness statements to determine the exact cause of the brawl.
