Municipality confirms pool closed for revamp

Nicosia municipality on Friday confirmed that the municipal swimming pool will remain closed this season for revamp works.

In a statement, it said it had managed to claim the required funds for a radical upgrade of the swimming pool also known as ‘Lellos’ after the late mayor, Lellos Demetriades.

The revamp includes the three pools, namely the Olympic swimming pool, the municipal swimming pool and the diving pool, as well as the stands and buildings in the same premises, the municipality said.

It added that the tender has already been evaluated and was deemed sufficient by the municipal’s tender board.

Works will start as soon as the Cyprus sports organisation (KOA) secures the additional funds.

“We are expecting the response from KOA, and if positive we will proceed immediately with awarding the tender to commence work as soon as possible,” the announcement said.

Media reported an effort will be made for the works to be completed at the pool by mid-2023.

Apart from opening to the public every June, the Nicosia swimming pool also hosts about 80 per cent of the competitive sports in the swimming and water polo sector in the Nicosia district and 50 per cent of these athletes across the island.

Those athletes will be allocated to other districts for training.

According to the municipality, the revamp is necessary since the facility was built in the 1980s and has not been upgraded since then.
