A journey of Jazz music from America to Paris of 1945

from paris with jazz

Music from Duke Ellington and Garry Barton, to Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli will sound at Technopolis 20 as the Paphos cultural centre opens its garden for events and music during the summer season. To celebrate the occasion, a concert will be held on Wednesday at 8pm with several local musicians. The From Paris with Jazz performance is presented by the Alliance Française de Limassol in collaboration with the French Institute of Cyprus and sponsored by the Cultural Services of the ministry of education.

“During 1945,” say the event organisers, “important American jazz composers (such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gilespie, Miles Davis) took refuge from the racial discrimination in America in France. There they met other musicians persecuted in other countries but also French nationals (such as Reinhardt, Grappelli and more), all having as a common language the one of jazz music.”

The concert on Wednesday will present the result of these meetings, the influence of French culture in its development and is addressed to an audience both familiar and not with jazz and gypsy jazz music, presenting hidden musical diamonds, the history of songs and the conditions that have been created.

Through the modern orchestrations that bridge the present with the past, and through a special music group where Cypriot virtuoso jazz musicians coexist, the concert presents the richness of jazz music and highlights the beauty of the musicians’ coexistence of that time and their origin’s diversity. The concert aims also to show how a relatively free country like France and specifically Paris of 1945, by offering the security of free expression, was able to influence the artistic expression in the past and to be reflected today in Cyprus, and not only.

Taking the garden stage will be musicians Andreas Rodosthenous, Ermis Michail, George Morfitis, Nicole Ardanitou, Elias Ioannou and Stelios Xydias before they also present the concert at Synergeio in Limassol on May 20.
