Dive into the story of water in Nicosia on this guided tour

new foundain3

A participatory walk in Nicosia is coming up on June 21, unlike any other. The guided tour in old Nicosia explores the city, yet it goes beyond the charming corners and historical monuments that the usual tours address. This narration-walk revolves around water and the city’s water tanks and will conclude with an open discussion with five industry professionals.

The participatory walk is part of the Head and Hand – Foun[d]ain programme by visual artist Kyriaki Costa that is participating in the New European Bauhaus festival this summer. It is held within the framework of the Performing and Live Arts Residency Programme at Theatro Polis OPAP, NiMAC and it invites Nicosia residents to discover another aspect of the capital.

Water has been one of the most important subjects the artist Kyriaki Costa has dealt with in her career, and one of her most known projects is ‘It’s Water – Taps and Sources of Nicosia’. In this project, the artist recorded all the water sources in the capital in an effort to reconstruct the water map of Nicosia, through re-activation of all the water sources of the city – fountains and taps – which once were used as meeting points for the community.

The Head and Hand – Foun[d]ain tour, will set off from NiMAC at 6.30pm guided by Antigone Michael and will end at 7.30pm at the water tank near the Nicosia Courts. There, participants will be able to take part in or watch an open dialogue on commons, fountains and water, which will be moderated by curator-geographer Nikos Akritidis, art historian Dr Christina Lambrou, archaeologist Antigoni Michael who specialises in cultural heritage, PhD Candidate in History-Theory of Architecture Stavroula Michael and architect, urbanist and programme director at MIT Future Heritage Lab, Melina Philippou. The evening will close with a reception at 8.30pm where speakers, participants and organisers can mingle and continue the conversation on Nicosia’s water sources.
