President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola on Friday reiterated the institution’s condemnation of Turkey’s continued violations of Security Council resolutions on Famagusta.

She was responding to correspondence sent to her by President Nicos Anastasiades.

According to a statement from the palace, President Metsola shares Anastasiades’ view that Turkish provocations in the enclosed city of Varosha undermine confidence-building efforts, as well as the prospect of resuming talks aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem.

She also welcomed Anastasiades’ proposals for Confidence Building Measures and agreed that these, in addition to the benefits for Greek and Turkish Cypriots, could pave the way for a solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant Security Council resolutions and the principles and values on which the European Union is founded.

At the same time, the government expressed its thanks to Metsola and the European Parliament for their positions of principle and their support for efforts made by Nicosia to relaunch the process towards achieving a settlement of the Cyprus problem.
