Man jailed for three months after drink driving accident

A 68-year-old man was sentenced to 90 days in jail by Larnaca district court on Tuesday after being involved in a drink-driving road traffic collision last November.

The court, which found the man guilty on charges of negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol, was also given penalty points on his licence, a €300 fine and suspension of his licence.

The accident occurred at around 4.30 in the afternoon of November 11, 2021, when the 68-year-old was driving his car on Anavyssou Street in Larnaca.

The man’s vehicle deviated from its course, resulting in it entering the oncoming lane of traffic and colliding with a vehicle driven by a 71-year-old woman, with a 13-year-old as a passenger.

From the collision two women were injured and were taken to Larnaca general hospital, where after receiving first aid, they were subsequently discharged.

The drivers of the two vehicles were subjected to a preliminary alcohol test, with the 71-year-old woman having a zero reading, while the man’s was 113μg, whereas the limit is 22.
