FRTUCY – Formula Racing Team University of Cyprus is a team consisting of students from the University of Cyprus. The team was formed in 2019 by undergraduate students from the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. Each year the team consists of about 50 members. Since 2019 the team has been expanding, attracting a wider range of students from the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Business and Public Administration.

The team has participated in the Formula Student UK competition, in the Concept Class category, for the 3rd year in a row. The aim of the competition is for students to design and manufacture a single seated formula 1 type vehicle. Formula Student UK has been established for 24 years and is comprised of experienced engineers from the automotive industry. It is considered to be one of the most demanding competitions in Europe. The students who participate have the opportunity to work on real-life design and manufacturing challenges in the field of motor sports.

This year, FRTUCY competed with physical presence in the competition, which took place in early July 2022 at Silverstone, UK. A total of 14 ambitious undergraduate students and members of FRTUCY, had the opportunity to travel to the UK and represent FRTUCY, the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, the University of Cyprus and Cyprus. In the Business Plan Presentation section of the competition, the team reached the finals for the second consecutive year, securing 3rd place amongst more than 75 universities from all over the world. In the overall rankings of the Concept Class category, the team achieved 6th place among 34 teams, thus achieving the initial goal of being in the top 10 teams in this year’s competition.

The team’s passion and hard work have already awarded them with success. It is worth mentioning that FRTUCY-2022 has won the first prize for the Project of the Year 2022 design competition hosted by Dassault Systems. FRTUCY has already started preparing for 2023, aiming to manufacture a single seater internal combustion vehicle and to compete in Formula Student competitions in the summer of 2023.

The team would like to thank their academic advisor Dr. Ioannis Ioannou who has supported and assisted the team since its inception, and the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering for its crucial support.

Additionally, the team expresses its gratitude to their Golden Sponsor for this year Essor Travel, whose support has enabled the team to travel to their first competition abroad.
