Alcohol and vehicle advertisements will be required to include road safety messages according to a proposal approved by cabinet on Wednesday.

The proposal made by Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos amends the relevant road safety law making it mandatory for the inclusion of road safety messages in advertisements related to the promotion of purchase or use of vehicles and alcohol.

“This is yet another tool that we will now have at our disposal in terms of road safety,” the minister said.

He compared the move with the obligation of companies to include health warning messages on tobacco products adding that other countries also follow this practice on various issues with success.

The bill will be immediately forwarded to for a vote the parliament.
