Works by Cypriot composers coming to Nicosia

cyso baroque 57

It is some of the very best classical music that audiences hear at the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra concerts. Renowned world composers and timeless pieces are often performed yet the next concert by the orchestra shifts its focus to local talent. Works by Cypriot Composers is the title of the upcoming concert, featuring purely contemporary Cypriot music.

Promoting local talent and work is one of the main objectives of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and is of vital importance for the musical life of the country, it says. As such, part of the Cyprophonia 1 series will see local composers in the spotlight on November 11 at Pallas Theatre.

The orchestra, under the direction of Christina Athinodorou, interprets works by four distinguished Cypriot composers: Ayis Ioannides, Tasos Stylianou, Andys Skordis and Christina Athinodorou. Their work connects the past with the present and reveals their personal quests, experiments and preoccupations. The diversity of their compositions in terms of inspiration, musical aesthetics and techniques, offers a rich and exciting soundscape. The programme will round off with Béla Bartók’s Divertimento for string orchestra.

The concerts to follow by the orchestra this autumn will feature Czech music and Cypriot opera singers as well as an exceptional British conductor leading the musicians. All while it prepares for the beloved Christmas concert series.
