Health service officials are currently carrying out an information campaign in Tsakilero, near Larnaca, warning people of the dangers posed by mosquitos in the area.

According to the head of the Health Services Herodotus Herodotou, the campaign has been underway for about a month.

“We are advising people on the best practices to control the mosquito population in the area,” he said adding that so far around 3,000 houses have been inspected.

Mosquito traps have also been installed where necessary.

“We are surveying the areas where most mosquito outbreaks have been reported. People living in those areas are being advised on what to do.

“Health services officials are noting all information collected in order to have a better idea of the situation.”

Herodotou said the ongoing campaign is extremely important as it informs people on what to do to control the mosquito population.

“We have destroyed several hatching sites for mosquitoes. We found a very high number of eggs and larvae in water containers and ponds where inspections have taken place,” he said.

Herodotou also added that the yellow fever mosquito population is easier to control compared to other species as it cannot survive lower temperatures.

An official statement released on Thursday said that Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantela will chair a special meeting with experts and stakeholders aimed at combating the increase in the mosquito population in Larnaca and Limassol on Friday.
