The pan-European, progressive movement Democracy in Europe Movement (DiEM25), whose stated goal is “to democratise the EU before it disintegrates,” has launched a branch of the movement in Cyprus.

The largely grass roots movement was founded in 2016 by a group of Europeans, including former Greek Finance Minister Yiannis Varoufakis and Croatian philosopher Srećko Horvat.

Representatives of DiEM25 held three days of political events, visits and meetings organised by the local coordinating committee, to mark the official opening of DiEM25 Cyprus with speaker Kriton Arsenis, at the University of Cyprus. Discussions with participants followed the event.

Last Thursday, the group paid a visit to Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre where NGO Birdlife Cyprus updated participants on the situation in the area, followed by an open gathering in Limassol.
