An antiflooding project will start this June in the Larnaca area of Kamares-Vergina, over eight years after floods caused €2 million worth of damage in the region.

The Larnaca sewerage and drainage board is expected to announce the tender for the construction of the anti-flooding project this month, its director Angelos Hadjicharalambous told the Cyprus News Agency on Wednesday.

He explained that some issues have arisen with the expropriations and the tender will be ready soon on the basis of the study prepared by a private consultant on behalf of the interior ministry.

“We estimate the works will start in June 2023, will take about 14 months, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, we expect the works to be ready for the 2024-2025 winter season,” Hadjicharalambous said.

The board will be supervising the project, which will be financed with €5 million from the interior ministry.

The project was deemed necessary after floods in December 2014 hit the Kamares area and cased material damage totalling over €2 million, the sewerage board director said.

According to the study, the probability of flooding after the works will be 1 in 50 or 2 per cent, provided the frequency of rainfall remains unchanged.

The study also states that the Kalo Chorio river consists of four tributaries located where Peletiko factory is, Larnaca and Aradippou industrial area and Pendadactylou street. The watercourse of the four tributaries is unified on Dryadon street where there is a concrete channel that ends at the Larnaca salt lake.

Works will include, among others, widening of the motorway bridges in the area of Kalo Chorio, Myrmidonon street, but also Limassol avenue which will be integrated with the bridge on Larissis street. Embankments and rubble in the stream of Kalo Chorio river at Limassol avenue will also be removed.

The project also includes works that will be carried out on the bridges near Verginas school, widening of open earthen channel in the industrial area of Larnaca, and the earthen channel from Archbishop Paisios to Antheon streets which will be lined with concrete.

A new artificial waterway east the Vergina school will also be constructed and the shifting of Larissis street to be adjacent the Limassol avenue.

No interventions are foreseen at the salt lake or near the Kamares monument, Hadhicharalambous said.

Instead, it is proposed to restore the Kamares Aqueduct to its original form by removing the embankments. This will allow the river runoff to enter the salt lake through several openings.
