Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Colin Stewart, is expected to brief the security council on Tuesday, ahead of the reports on UNFICYP and the UN secretary-general’s good services, and the resolution to renew the peacekeeping force’s mandate.

The negotiator for the Greek Cypriot side, Menelaos Menelaou, was also in New York and made a series of contacts. The member states’ consultations on the resolution are expected to last about two weeks and the adoption of the resolution is expected to take place at the end of the month.

Diplomatic sources report that what the Cypriot government side is waiting to see is how the discussions will unfold and how the resolution will be shaped so as to offer the best possible result.
