Three book bazaars coming to Nicosia

Bibliophiles have plenty to look forward to this month as three events will celebrate the world of reading and writing. Nicosia will host three distinct book bazaars this May, one coming up this weekend and the other two taking place just before the month ends. Find second-hand books, Cypriot editions and get together with other book lovers over coffee or beer.

Coming up first is the Beer & Book Day the 1948 Cultural Foundation organises on Saturday in an effort to contribute to the development and dissemination of the love for books as the material carrier of literature, philosophy and poetry. This will be the second edition of the event, happening at Haratsi in old Nicosia from 2pm to 10pm.

The event will host plenty of beer and books, of course, from a variety of publications such as Almyra, Rizes and Tsifides as well as the Modern Era and from the Ideodromio, Mouflon and Peridiavasi bookstores. At 3pm, a reading of a children’s book by Stavros X Petrou will take place while an hour later he will stage a street performance. At 4.30pm, a discussion on literature and politics will happen with Antonis Balasopoulous. Then vinyl records music by DJ Harito will entertain visitors before a presentation on street art, tradition and globalisation takes place at 7.30pm by TwentyThree. Finally, Nasia Lina Georgiou and Stylianos Sokratous will perform a live music set at 8.30pm, wrapping up the event with groovy tunes.

Then on May 27, Soloneion Book Centre will host its annual book bazaar from 9am to 6pm. Displayed at the popular Nicosia bookshop will be children’s books, Greek and English fiction, travel books, poetry books, geography books, guides, university textbooks and all kinds of genres that will be on discount of up to 80 per cent. The same bazaar will be repeated on June 10.

On the same weekend is a Second-Hand Book Market that Palaiovivliopolio o Taxideutis organises on May 28 at Entos ton Technwn. From 11am to 6pm, the old Nicosia venue will fill with used books ranging across numerous genres and languages. Bibliophiles, May is the month for you!
