CySO bringing summer sounds to Cyprus

cyso cyprophonia 3

For the first month of the summer season, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra is preparing three concerts, each celebrating a variety of local and international artists, diverse music genres and artistic expression. To kick start its June agenda, the orchestra is travelling to rural areas around the country as part of its Community Outreach Concert series.

From June 1 to 10, orchestra musicians will perform in the villages of Polis Chrysochous, Ypsonas, Pervolia, Paralimni, Malounta and Lefkara under the direction of the young Cypriot conductor Kyriaki Kountouri. Popular classics, ranging from overtures and music for the stage to works inspired by traditional dances as well as orchestral arrangements of Cypriot traditional songs will make up the repertoire. What’s more, all six concerts take place for free!

Next is a very special concert that will take place in mid-June celebrating one of the greatest opera singers. Telethon in collaboration with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra organises this fundraising concert-Tribute to Maria Callas on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of her birth in an event at the presidential palace on June 16.

“Maria Callas has been the greatest and most popular opera soprano while her emblematic voice and presence remains to this day a paradigm for artists and opera lovers alike, hailed as La Divina,” say organisers. “In this tribute, a stunning selection of famous arias and duets from the legendary singer’s repertoire will be presented by two extraordinary soloists: soprano Alessandra di Giorgio and tenor Diego Godoy, under the direction of maestro Günter Neuhold.” The soprano and author of a biography on Callas, Eleni Kanthou will present the programme.

The concert is held under the auspices of President Nikos Christodoulides and the First Lady Philippa Christodoulides, Honorary Patron of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, while all of the proceeds raised will be donated to Telethon.

For the last June concert, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra join forces in a symphonic concert that showcases the talents of two highly promising young musicians from the youth orchestra. The Cyprophonia 3 concert will take place on June 30 at Skali Amphitheatre in Aglandjia.

Under the baton of the two orchestras’ respective Artistic Directors Günter Neuhold and Giorgos Kountouris, Loucas Demetriou, CyYSO concertmaster, will shine in the dazzling introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saëns. Petros Chimonides, CyYSO principal percussionist, promises to mesmerise audiences in Paul Creston’s Concertino for marimba and orchestra from 1940, a work with plenty of rhythmic bite and Ravelian flavour.

This festive summer concert will close with Gustav Mahler’s 1st Symphony, featuring some his individual compositional traits: the depiction of nature, the use of folk elements, pompous rhetoric and huge orchestral forces.
