Volunteers collected 680 kilos of rubbish along the Dasoudi beachfront as part of the underwater and beach cleanliness campaign in Limassol.

The clean-up was organised by the Coastal Studies and Research Centre ‘Akti’, the French embassy, and the French Institute – with 105 volunteers taking part.

That included 77 children from Germasogia primary school.

“In half an hour the volunteers retrieved 680kg of rubbish from the sea and the shore,” a statement read on Thursday, adding that the Akti team implemented the European protocol for sorting waste.

It added that 80 per cent of the items collected from the sea were construction materials, while on the shore over 80 per cent were single-use plastics – with hundreds of cigarette butts being collected.
