June has plenty of music events in store for the island’s music lovers including a classical music concert in Paphos on World Music Day, June 21.

The Solo Cello Concert with Ivan Monighetti is the next event as part of the Technopolis 20 Classics series, which will bring the distinguished performer, pedagogue and conductor Ivan Monighetti to the Paphos Ancient Odeon. Monighetti is one of the most versatile personalities in the classical music world today.

“The concert will take place on World Music Day at the Paphos Ancient Odeon, one of the most important monuments of Nea Paphos, where the audience will also have the opportunity to experience the beautiful sunset of Paphos just before the concert begins,” say organisers.

“Cellist, teacher and conductor Ivan Monighetti has enjoyed an illustrious career for more than four decades, which has taken him throughout Europe, to America, Japan and Korea,” they comment. “In addition to masterful interpretations of the classical repertoire, he has become known for numerous premieres of modern compositions dedicated to him, many of which are now part of the regular cello repertoire. His rich discography includes over 40 recordings, which have been praised by the press and critics. Cello professor at the Escuela Superier Reina Sofia and Doctor Honoris Causa of the Academy of Music in Krakow, Ivan Monighetti was a cello professor at the Musik Akademie Basel for almost 30 years, where he trained several generations of cellists. His students include internationally acclaimed cellists such as Sol Gabetta and Kian Soltani.”

The programme for the June 21 concert will include works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Sofia Gubaidulina, Enric Casals, Mecislaw Wainberg, Gaspar Cassado and Astor Piazzola.
