High levels of dust in atmosphere

High concentrations of dust were recorded in the atmosphere again on Thursday, prompting the labour inspection department to warn the public against going outdoors.

Employers should also take the necessary measures to protect workers in outdoor spaces, who are recommended to use personal protective equipment.

As the dust contains small inhalable particles, which are likely to have a negative effect on human health, the public and particularly vulnerable groups are advised to avoid going outdoors until the phenomenon has passed. Vulnerable groups are defined as the elderly, children and people who are sick.

According to the announcement, the highest dust concentrations were recorded in Nicosia with 94 μg/m3 and Limassol with 93,7 μg/m3, followed by Paphos with 90.1 μg/m3. Famagusta recorded 89.8 μg/m3 and Larnaca 83.3 μg/m3, while Zygi 81.4 μg/m3 and Ayia Marina Xyliatou was at 67.9 μg/m3 as of 8am.

Based on the relevant legislation, a limit value not to be exceeded is set for the daily average concentrations at 50 μg/m3 (microgrammes per cubic metre).
