The government is prioritising strengthening the Fire Service through resource allocation, technological advancements, and specialised training programmes in the face of climate change, Justice Minister Anna Procopiou said on Friday.

Procopiou was leading a commemoration for the Fire Service on the occasion of the Feast of the Prophet Daniel, celebrated on December 17, which tells the tale of three children who spent part of their life in a fiery furnace.

She likened the story to the firefighters’ mission in life.

Procopiou highlighted “the enduring dedication and sacrifices made by the Fire Service in their tireless efforts to combat fires and undertake challenging missions.”

Addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change, Procopiou mentioned the increasing frequency and intensity of fires and extreme weather events.

She said it is vital to continuously reinforce fire protection measures to ensure the safety of people in the country, as well as the preservation of property, commending the Fire Service for its responses to challenging incidents.

In her closing remarks, Procopiou paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty and honoured retired firefighters for laying the foundation for a modern and efficient Fire Service.

“I am confident that the Fire Service will keep adapting and responding effectively to the evolving demands of our times, and persist in standing beside citizens, unwavering in their commitment to protect and serve.”
