The third week of January will welcome the seventh solo exhibition of artist George Mavros as he presents a new body of work titled This is our Cyprus. The exhibition will open at Gloria Gallery on January 16, and will remain open until the end of the month.

The Paphos-born artist has known many callings. After graduating from school, he enlisted in the National Guard and travelled as a sailor. The smells and memories of his home however brought him back to his beloved Paphos where he married and built a family. His artistic work is varied and uses a mix of materials such as copper, clay, marble, wood and oil paints. The art of painting won him over however, motivated by colours and scenes from Cypriot tradition.

Images from local holidays such as Easter and Christmas influence his work as well as scenes from summer, harvest and weddings. Landscapes from mountains, village stables and even proverbs and sayings also inspire his work.

“George’s painting is experiential and at the same time very narrative,” say the organisers of his upcoming exhibition. “The artist approaches tradition with respect and love. These feelings are reflected in his work. His painting has quite a lot of naive elements with a tendency to render the volume and generally the third dimension.”
