Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos was in Slovenia on Friday discussing the Cyprus problem and bilateral relations with his counterpart Tanja Fajon.
During a press conference, Fajon said she supports an extension of the UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus and intends to contribute up to 15 troops.
The two ministers held talks earlier in the day, where they discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen cooperation between their countries at the level of MED9, as well as issues related to the European agenda including enlargement and the situation in the Western Balkans.
Also on the agenda were preparations ahead of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026.
Kombos briefed Fajon on the current developments over the Cyprus problem, conveying the government’s readiness to resume talks with the aim of achieving a sustainable solution, on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.
He also thanked Fajon for “Slovenia’s principled position which it maintains on the Cyprus problem” and expressed belief that both countries will cooperate closely within the framework of Slovenia’s status as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the current period.
They also exchanged views about the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. The two ministers condemned Hamas’ terrorist attacks against Israel and focused on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and the need to protect all civilians. In this context, Kombos informed his counterpart about the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to create a maritime corridor for humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Gaza.
Kombos was also received by President of Slovenia Nataša Pirc Musar, as well as President of the National Assembly Urška Klakočar Zupančič. During the meetings, they confirmed “the excellent level of bilateral relations” as well as the willingness of both sides to further strengthen cooperation at bilateral and multilateral level.
