The total number of individuals employed by the government in Cyprus averaged 54,481 during the period from January to July 2024, according to a report released this week by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat).

This marks an increase of 2,238 individuals, a rise of 4.3 per cent, compared to the same period in 2023.

According to the report, in July alone, government employment stood at 53,039 individuals.

In the public service, there were 12,032 permanent employees, accounting for 51.6 per cent of the workforce.

Additionally, there were 4,235 employees on indefinite contracts, representing 18 per cent, 1,231 employees on fixed-term contracts, making up 5.3 per cent, and 5,835 hourly wage workers, constituting 25 per cent of the total.

Within the education service, there were 11,888 permanent employees, comprising 75 per cent of the workforce, alongside 1,158 employees on indefinite contracts, which accounted for 7 per cent.

It also included 2,593 employees on fixed-term contracts, representing 16 per cent of the total number, as well as 141 hourly wage workers, making up less than 1 per cent of the people in the service.

In the security forces, 8,327 permanent employees made up 59.8 per cent of the workforce, while 4,559 employees on indefinite contracts accounted for 33 per cent.

Thes service also included 298 employees on fixed-term contracts, representing 2.1 per cent, while 742 hourly wage workers comprised 5 per cent of the total.
