A 24-year-old food delivery worker was remanded in custody for four days by the Limassol district court on charges related to illegal possession of drugs, the distribution of counterfeit currency and possession of counterfeiting equipment.

The suspect was found smoking a joint in an apartment by members of the Limassol drug squad Ykan on Sunday.

The police said they found the man smoking “a hand-rolled cigarette which was found to contain a quantity of cannabis mixed with tobacco”.

He was arrested for the offence, and a grinder with traces of cannabis was also seized.

During a subsequent search of his moped, officers discovered six aluminium foil sheets under the seat, embossed with the designs of €5, €10, €20, €100, €200 and €500 banknotes.

A body search also revealed a wallet containing four €50 notes, which were confirmed to bear the same serial number and were determined to be counterfeit.

The suspect was taken to the Ykan offices, where he reportedly gave a voluntary statement admitting that the drugs were for personal use.

After being formally charged for drug-related offences, he was released but re-arrested by the Limassol criminal investigation department (CID) in connection with the counterfeit banknotes.

The court on Monday ordered his four-day detention. Both the Ykan squad and Limassol CID are continuing their investigations.
