Attorney-general George Savvides and deputy attorney-general Savvas Angelides met on Monday with a delegation from the Law Commission of England and Wales and discussed various aspects of law reform, and the need for legislation in emerging areas such as online activities and artificial intelligence.
The visiting delegation was led by the chair of the Law Commission of England and Wales, Sir Peter Fraser and the First Parliamentary Counsel and Permanent Secretary Jessica de Mounteney. It also included Matthew Jolley, and Roshnee Patel, both officials of the Law Commission of England and Wales.
The visit was arranged following an invitation from the Cyprus Law Commissioner, with the delegation set to participate in a conference scheduled for Tuesday. Attorney-General Savvides is expected to deliver opening remarks at the event.
The meeting was also attended by Law Commissioner Louiza Christodoulidou-Zannetou and by representatives from the British High Commission.
The meeting also included briefings on each agency’s responsibilities and explored potential avenues for collaboration.
Tuesday’s conference, organised by the Law Commissioner’s Office, will address topics relevant to legislative drafting and law revision.
Supported by the Cyprus Bar Association and the Press and Information Office (PIO), the event will take place at the Leventis Gallery in Nicosia and aims to provide training for civil service officials, legal professionals, and academics.
Topics will include bill drafting, methodology in legislative drafting, and the broader importance of law review.
