Cyprus’ gender pay gap stands at 10 per cent, gender equality commissioner Josie Christodoulou said on Thursday.
Speaking at an awards ceremony, she said that “gender discrimination remains in the workplace and stereotypes continue to categorise professions into ‘male-dominated’ and ‘female-dominated’, with the former being paid more”.
She added that there is “a lot of ground to cover” to work towards “equal pay and equality between women and men at work”.
To this end, she said, the government is working towards gender equality across the board, particularly in the world of work, with the government having implemented a ‘national strategy’ on the matter.
The current national strategy, which covers the period between this year and 2026, was announced after the European Union’s statistical agency Eurostat had ranked Cyprus at 21st out of 27 European Union member states for gender equality.
