Cyprus was committed to safeguarding its sovereignty and promoting regional cooperation, Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas said on Friday.

The minister was speaking at an event to mark Saint Nicholas Day, the patron saint of the navy, which took place at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari.

Palmas stressed Cyprus’ position as a reliable and stable partner in the Eastern Mediterranean, advocating for a stronger role in defence collaboration to enhance regional security.

“We aim to defend Cyprus’s sovereign rights and establish our homeland as a credible and steadfast ally while fostering friendship and cooperation among neighbouring states,” he said.

As part of the celebrations, a new high-speed vessel named Kyrenia was officially inducted into the navy’s fleet.

The vessel was donated by Safe Bulkers Incorporated, led by CEO Polys Hadjioannou. Expressing gratitude, Palmas described the donation as a testament to Hadjioannou’s dedication to his country and its security.

“This contribution reflects a practical commitment to enhancing Cyprus’s safety at a time when effective crisis response is more crucial than ever,” the minister said.

“The ability to immediately mobilise and carry out missions in adverse conditions enhances the readiness and strategic capability of our forces,” he added.

Palmas also highlighted Cyprus’s strategic importance in the region, noting its evolving role as a pillar of stability amid tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

He also referred to the National Guard’s ongoing modernisation to ensure readiness against emerging threats and praised its personnel for their professionalism and dedication.

“The National Guard, as the main defender of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and as the main defender of freedom, will continue to be modernised and strengthened so that it can respond immediately and effectively to any challenge,” he said.

The upgrading of Cyprus’ defence capabilities, was also part of the government’s policy to for the “provision of facilities to friendly countries.”

Cyprus, he said, understood the specificities that characterise the fragile geopolitical landscape in the region and the challenges and the island was ready to respond to all developments.

“We are moving forward decisively, ready to secure our interests and contribute to the effort to achieve security, peace, stability and cooperation in the region.”
