Medical staff on Monday urged the public to go easy on their food and drink over the holidays and drive carefully so they don’t end up in emergency rooms, which are already packed to the brim.
Limassol and Nicosia general hospitals in particular have had patients waiting more than 24 hours before they can be admitted, according to Pasydy nursing union.
It said ambulances are stuck in front of ERs as beds to examine patients are not available. As a temporary measure, private hospitals have made beds available “but the problem needs to be monitored by the health ministry and state health services (Okypy).”
The union said this was paramount so as to ensure patient safety, proper functioning of the ERs are well as proper working conditions for staff.
As such, Pasydy called on members of the public to avoid overeating, overdrinking, reckless driving or anything else that could end them up in hospitals as the situation was quite dire.
